The Surgeon General called loneliness an underappreciated public health crisis. In this meeting on January 21, 2024, we explored the scope of isolation and loneliness, particularly as we age, how it impacts the choice to hasten death, and what can be done to alleviate the stress, discomfort, and sadness it causes. The speakers included Faye Girsh, Hemlock Society founder and retired clinical psychologist; Donald Moore, MD, Hemlock Society board member and MAID provider; Pam Impson, Hemlock society admin who battles chronic depression; and Janet Hager, Hemlock Society Interim President and Treasur who discusses how she coped with her devastating grief and loneliness after losing her husband. Included in the presentation are practical tips and advice on how to cope with loneliness for the good life and good death we strive for.
