Event Details

Dr. McCann is an active cancer doctor, new to UCSD, and teaching about medical aid in dying to doctors there as well as helping terminal patients who request it. She will talk about cases where aid in dying can extend lives, not just end them, and how other doctors react to her endorsement of MAID.  If cancer strikes Dr. McCann will discuss when it is appropriate to consider MAID and how to find a doctor. A Q&A session will follow her presentation.

An estimated 626,140 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States by the end of 2026, according to the American Cancer Society Cancer Statistics Center. Worldwide, cancer accounts for nearly 10 million deaths each year. Across the United States and international jurisdictions, cancer is consistently the most common underlying disease reported among individuals who utilize Medical Aid in Dying (MAID), accounting for roughly 67% to 76% of all cases.
