Attorney Bill Simmons. Bill is a former Board member of the Hemlock Society of San Diego and speaks around San Diego on advance directives and communication with [not “to”] loved ones about one’s wishes.
Bill addressed the legal issues faced by those who support a patient who chooses to terminate their life by whatever means. Special emphasis was on the loved ones and agent of a person diagnosed with dementia who might choose Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking – VSED.
Dr. Karl Steinberg is a geriatrician and palliative care specialist who has been a nursing home and hospice medical director in the San Diego area since 1995. He spoke about the legal concerns/constraints faced by hospices and skilled nursing facilities when dealing with patients seeking to end their lives through Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED) or California’s End Of Life Options Act (EOLOA).
Kristin Rigsbee, Ombudsman for the County’s Elder Care program also spoke.
